Police Dog Gary “Gaz”
14 May 2015 – 17 July 2019
Handled by PC 23695 Skinner
Police Dog “Gaz” was a German Shepherd who transferred to Hampshire Constabulary from TVP when he was 24 months old due to his previous handler retiring. He was natural and took to police work with a very strong positive attitude.
His love of sticks could distract him at times but he was ready for battle when the call came! “Gaz” was also trained to work with the Tactical Firearms Team and deployed to numerous firearms operations during his service to support them.
Gaz was very successful in locating suspects. He was awarded a Chief Constable’s Commendation for Bravery, for biting and detaining a suspect armed with a chain saw, in Southampton on a busy weekend night. He also saved a missing person, who had left an address and threatened to kill himself. The male was located by “Gaz” with serious injuries. He also tracked and detained a drug dealer who had several thousand pounds worth of drugs still on him.
Police Dog “Gaz” was sadly lost to the service and died in kennels whilst his handler was on leave out of the country. To this day he is sadly missed, by his handler and family, (as well as Police Dog “Libby”). He was a well balanced dog and a pleasure to have at home. He never got to retire or due to his age, fulfil his true potential.
“GARY THE DOG” you’ll always be missed!
