Police Dog Duke
Handled by PC 2708 Colin White
Duke was an English Springer Spaniel, who came to the police with an unknown history or age.
He was trained to search for explosives at the regional dog training school in Surrey and initially could not help himself and kept chasing rabbits, birds and crossing numerous fields. This earned him the nickname “Dukey Two Fields”, although he eventually worked out it was more fun to search for explosives, as he was guaranteed a toy when he found them.
Duke covered numerous large scale events, such as Trafalgar 200, cruise ship launches and Royal visits. Whilst searching for the late HM The Queen, Duke came across the dog whistles she had dropped, and on their return she was much amused by the finder’s name!
He was also on duty the day of the 7/7 terrorist attack in London and, with another colleague, Duke and his handler Colin spent many hours rushing around the county to suspect devices seen by worried members of the public.
Duke retired to live with Colin’s late Grandmother, and he had a very happy and very spoilt time with her.
