Babe
We believe that the memorial refers to “Babe” Greening who was a Traffic Warden for the Netley and Bitterne area in the 1970s/80s. It’s possible that her first name was Doreen.
It is thought that she died somewhen between 1983 and 1988, and is buried in the cemetery on Portsmouth Road at its junction with Butts Road.
It’s believed that she was single and lived in Thornhill until she died.
Former officers recall that she was always making the tea and looking after the police officers (whom she called “her boys”) stationed and on shift at the former Netley Police Station.
She was a lovely woman and many officers have fond memories of her.
The plaque reads:
Dedicated to the memory of
Babe
From your “boys” at Netley
