This Day In History: 1880-11-01

1880 – Hampshire Constabulary were deployed to deal with riots on bonfire night in Bournemouth. What followed was an allegation of violence on behalf of a particular officer which resulted him being called upon to resign. The officer appealed and argued that given the circumstances the punishment was too severe. He lost his appeal but it led to a review of a chief constable’s disciplinary powers.
