Hampshire Constabulary has access to the personnel records for the following forces:
Hampshire Constabulary 1839 – 1987
Southampton City 1860 – 1967
Portsmouth City 1860 – 1967
Isle of Wight 1890 – 1941
Winchester 1872 – 1909
The records include a physical description of the officer, personal and family details as well as details of their postings and promotions etc.
There is an 80 year closure period on the records and so some of the later records are not generally available.
The original records are available at the Record Offices at Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester, but the same closure records apply.
These records offer a great source of information for genealogists.
If you are unable to get to the appropriate Records Office, the Curator will access the record for you and send you an typed transcript of the relevant record.

I am researching John Bennett b 1817 who went on to be Superintendent of Police at Petersfield. I have his examination record but would love to find out more about him and his work – are you able to help please? Many thanks.
I am trying to find out where my Husband did his police training, he joined around 1964, 1965 and we lived in Winchester, his name Anthony Ronald Green, PC 912 now deceased.
Hi Margaret, your husband would have started his Police career at Police Headquarters, Winchester and then gone on to No.6 District Police Training Centre at Sandgate, near Folkestone in Kent. I am afraid we do not have a picture of his course.
I am researching Herbert Sidney Dean, my fathers cousin, Born 1920, Ryde, Isle of Wight. He was killed in a motorcycle accident on his way back to the IOW after attending a Police Training College in Falfield. Any additional information you could give me would be much appreciated. I realise there is an 80 year clause, but as I am nearly 70 myself, I would appreciate any further information you could possibly supply. Thank you for your help. Gloria Hearn
Hi I am researching my Great grandfather Edward FINCH who was stationed at Christchurch st police station 1891 as a police constable looking for any photos of original police station and more information (my grandmother was born there) thank you for reading
Hi, I have a Special Constabulary LS@GC medal to Hubert Nimrod Lock(1875-1955). The medal was awarded up to or during 1936. The 1939 census records Hubert Lock as a Special Constable living in Alton, Hampshire. I’d like to find out when the medal was awarded and whether any long service bars were subsequently issued in respect of the medal.
We have very few records of Special Constables. I am afraid we do not have a record of Hubert Lock. Derek Stevens, Curator
Good afternoon,
I sent an e mail to hchscurator@btinternet.com a couple of weeks ago regarding a Southampton Docks Policeman William Luffman.
I just wanted to confirm that it had been received as I haven’t had an acknowledgement.
Best Regards
Chris
Hi Chris, I have sent you an email. Derek Stevens, Curator
Hi there
After spending a considerable amount of time trying to get any medals that my father PC SC Spooner was entitled to
I have now obtained a Defence medal together with a certificate from the Cabinet Office.
As you hold the service records of our father is it possible to have this issue of medal added to his records
Thankyou for your help now and in the past
Barrie Spooner
Hi My 3x Gt Grand Uncle Thomas Loney EADES was a police officer in Norfolk Constabulary and a Principal Gate Keeper at the Convict Prison in Portsea/Portsmouth according to the 1851 & 1871 censuses respectively. He also was chosen (although I don’t think he took up the post in the end) as an Assistant Relieving Officer whilst working in Norfolk as he is mentioned in an exchange of letters between the first Chief Constable of Norfolk and the Rev E Howman of Bexwell from the early 19th Century. Would you have any such records that relate to Thomas Loney EADES time whilst serving in Hampshire Constabulary or indeed mention him possibly being an Assistant Relieving Officer whilst serving in Norfolk Constabulary (although this information may be with Norfolk).
Kind Regards
Margaret
I am looking to find the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Police Examination Books to find details of my Uncle, Lawrence Arthur Bryant, b 1923 Croydon, who after his Army Service in the Royal Hampshire Regiment, joined Portsmouth City Police between 1950 and 1956, when he then rejoined the Army in the Royal Pioneer Corp.
Can you tell me where I can find this information.
